Hohnack Castle: a Remarkable Site to Discover
Just a 30-minute walk from the campsite, Hohnack Castle stands on a small peak at an altitude of 927 m, called Petit Hohnack. It is the second highest castle in Alsace. Behind its ruins, ancient eras and a remarkable strategic position can be discerned.
This medieval castle was built in the 11th century and was gradually expanded until the end of the 15th century. It was dismantled in the 17th century by order of Louis XIV, but its remains still preserve beautiful structures: sections of walls, vaulted cellars, and enclosure elements. The view from the heights is striking, especially on a clear day.
The neighboring peak, Grand Hohnack, reaches 976 m and contains protohistoric remains. This proximity to ancient and strategic sites enhances the historical interest of the place. It is a cultural, natural, and peaceful stop, perfect for heritage enthusiasts or those curious about local history.
A hike between nature and history
Walks, Panorama, and Heritage around the Castle
Reaching Hohnack Castle from the campsite is an excellent hike — accessible for experienced walkers — that combines effort, contemplation, and discovery. The trail leads you through forests, clearings, and gentle slopes, with viewpoints offering views of the valley and surrounding hills.
Along the way, the rich landscape alternates between beech forests, fir forests, and mossy rocks. The route is dotted with interpretive panels and explanatory markers on local fauna, flora, and history. These elements enhance the educational interest of the walk, especially for families with children.
As you progress, you can observe remnants of ancient walls, traces of fortifications, and carved stones abandoned in nature. The panorama at the summit rewards the effort: on the horizon, the Vosges reliefs, forest ridges, and the Alsace plain emerge in a harmonious ensemble, perfect for a contemplative break or an impromptu picnic.
